Early Learning

At Settlers Primary School, we use a holistic approach to early childhood education that balances play-based learning with explicit teaching. We recognise the diverse backgrounds of our students, and connect learning to their experiences and interests, valuing strong family partnerships.

We support children’s right to play and learn through positive adult and peer interactions, with a focus on risky play and integrating outdoor learning. Our approach includes a carefully curated balance of intentional play and explicit teaching, guided by evidence-based practices and high expectations. Our explicit teaching model incorporates high-participation tactics and daily reviews, which ensures consistency from Kindergarten to Year Six.

We draw on the Early Years Learning Framework, Western Australian Curriculum, and the National Quality Standards to ensure the best outcomes for our students. We teach students to demonstrate respect and take ownership of their learning and their actions.  Through play we empower students to show resilience, solve problems, and advocate for themselves.

Our goal is for students to develop a love of learning, engage with safe risk-taking, and foster strong relationships so they can SOAR at Settlers and beyond.
